City located at a strategic crossing of the upper Euphrates River (q.v.). It is mentioned in the wars with Persia (q.v.). Julian (q.v.), for example, used it as a naval station in his Persian campaign of 363. Once occupied by the Arabs (q.v.) in 639, it was often attacked by Byzantine expeditions. In 873 Basil I (q.v.) seized it temporarily. It was reconquered by John I Tzimiskes (q.v.) in 958. By the late 11th century it was in the hands of the Turks (q.v.).
